Call Senate Rules Committee Members

The Senate Rules Committee is meeting Friday, February 25 at 8am in room 321 of the Roundhouse. Part of their agenda is to introduce a substitute bill that will replace the other election reform bills currently before the committee. It is very important to let these Senators know your opinion on this today!

In each call, make the point that any useful legislation must include the specific languages of "voter-verified paper ballots" AND "automatic audit provisions." If you leave a message, ask the note-taker to write down those specific words. Leave a message if you cannot speak with a legislator. Be sure to leave your name and phone number. Also we ask that you do not talk about other voting issues at this time. We want to send a clear and short message on these important topics.

February 8, 2005 -- Steve Fettig

Please make one phone call to House Speaker Ben Lujan (986-4782, in Santa Fe, during business hours only). Ask Lujan to support legislation this session on two topics; (1) require voter-verifiable paper ballots (VVPB) from all voting machines, and (2) stop the Secretary of State from purchasing any new non-VVPB machines.

Talk with him directly, or leave your name and number, asking him to call you back.

House Speaker Ben Lujan is one of the key Democrats who are slowing any movement toward election reform. Lujan is asking for a special panel to be appointed to study voting problems and to propose changes to be enacted during 2006 legislative session. Some changes can wait until 2006, but others cannot. We need to ask for voter-verifiable paper ballots (VVPBs) for all voting machines. We need to get that requirement passed this legislative session so that we have a chance of get VVPBs in place for the 2006 elections. If we wait until 2006 for legislation, we may have to using the current problematic or questionable machines for another general election.

If you need additional information to urge Mr. Lujan, please make sure that he knows about his own party's state-wide resolution, passed by the Democratic Central Committee of New Mexico on Saturday, April 24, 2004:

Resolution:
WHEREAS Direct Recording Electronic (DRE) voting machines of various kinds have been shown to be capable of producing unreliable, unverifiable results,
WHEREAS DRE voting systems with voter-verifiable, printed ballots will be available in the next year,
WHEREAS it would be a waste of funds to buy new systems now,
BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic Party insist that no new DRE voting machines be purchased until DRE voting systems are available with voter-verifiable, printed ballots.
BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic Party insist that any new DRE voting machines purchased in the future use voter-verifiable, printed ballots.
